2000

In the tradition of Australian tennis champions, the greats stand out - Laver, left handed as the devil and deadly, nuggetty Rosewell, imperious Emerson, Stolle, Newcombe, Cash, Rafter...the list goes on. A newcomer bids to join their ranks - young Lleyton Hewitt, who wears a back to front baseball cap - and attitude. His victory on grass at Queens over six- time Wimbledon champion Pete Sampras is indicative of his class and skill. At 19, Hewitt has proved himself as a world class player, and he stands now on the threshold of a genuine greatness. He needs no luck, but let fortune smile on him.  Editorial 20 June 2000 The Daily Telegraph
