Lleyton Hewitt, the U.S. Open Champ

Banners fly after every point
Cheering on our Aussie Champion
“Hewitt, you can do it”
One reads for our own Lleyton Hewitt.

A rise from no where he emerges
Where no-one knew his name
He claimed his first title at home
Eliminating the greats of the game.

It’s been an action packed – short career
For this feisty twenty year old
He is a first class fighter
He’s determined and he is bold.

“C’mon” he cries – it urges him on
He pumps his fist in the air
Point by point closer to another win
He does it with such flair.

With his trademark cap on backwards
The next target is to be the number one
If he wants it bad enough he’ll go and get it
And not stop until it is all said and done.

He plays with his heart for his country
As part of the Davis Cup team
He’s won the cup once before
But to win at home, that would be a dream.

He is a Grand Slam Champion
By winning the U.S. Open crown
He beat ‘Pistol Pete’ 7 – 6, 6 – 1, 6 – 1.
Lleyton was the toast of New York town.

---------------------------------------------------

I was proud to be an Australian early one morning in September
It was a moment like no other – surely one to remember
When a kid from Adelaide stepped onto the court
In a grand slam final – against Pete he had fought
It was written in the cards that one day he’d take the prize
Right from day one in Adelaide this kid has been on the rise
Haas, Blake and Roddick all lay in his wake
As Lleyton eyed the trophy, the crown he soon would take
As for Kafelnekov, those words in Brisbane he must still regret
As Lleyton dished out another tennis lesson – one he won’t forget
Standing in his way was a guy America called “Pistol Pete”
With his cap on backwards, ready for battle – not an easy feat
We all felt the joy as Lleyton played for the green and gold
As Lleyton’s Grand Slam dream began to unfold
Aussies woke early to watch with such high hopes
As Lleyton pulled no punches and had Pete hanging on the ropes
He broke early in the match of what was sure to be a marathon
Instead 7 – 6, 6 – 1, 6 – 1 Pete was given the lesson
He won the match and the crown when no one thought he’d do it
But the tennis world should never dismiss the likes of Lleyton Hewitt
Don’t criticize the way he acts that is just his way
Now nothing can stop him being number 1 one day
He plays for Australia and the green and gold with such pride
Cheer him on and he’ll surely take you along for the ride
And what a ride it had been, since the early days in Adelaide
He is the U.S. Open champion and now he has it made
