Barcelona Spain Dec 8-10
Spain defeated Australia 3-1
The Australian Davis Cup Team played its final tie with
Newcombe and Roche at the helm. Both men can be very proud of their achievements
and their contributions to Australian tennis.
Facing Spain on their clay was a Herculean battle for the Australian team of
Rafter, Hewitt, Woodforde and Stolle. They fought bravely but were unable to
conquer the Spaniards, who played confidently and aggressively. The Spanish spectators were
an abomination, and were encouraged by Duarte, Corretja and Costa. Juan Carlos Ferrero, a
young and talented Spanish player, was beyond reproach and played superb tennis.
Our Patrick succumbed to crippling cramps in his limbs while Lleyton continued to suffer from a
long-term illness.
Our boys gave their all.
